The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched a new campaign as part of USAID’s Malaria Action Program for Districts. The Chase Malaria Campaign will disseminate malaria prevention messages to help prevent new malaria cases and improve the understanding of the disease’s impact.
Led by Malaria Consortium, the USAID’s Malaria Action Program for Districts aims to address knowledge gaps related to the illness among caregivers in order to prevent children from dropping out of school due to malaria. The program will reach at least 13 million people across 43 districts in Uganda.
The campaign is part of the wider USAID and UK Aid jointly funded Malaria Action Program for Districts, which aims to prevent and control malaria morbidity and mortality and to minimise the social impact and economic losses on those affected by malaria.
“The program includes mosquito net distribution, health facility staff training on malaria in pregnancy, diagnostics and case management practices. It will also improve the capability of district health management teams to coordinate, plan, monitor, and evaluate malaria as part of Uganda’s National Malaria Control Program.”
USAID’s Malaria Action Program for Districts aims to improve the health status of the Ugandan population by reducing childhood and maternal morbidity and mortality due to malaria. The project will support the Government of Uganda for a period of five years, focusing in particular on children under five years of age and pregnant women.
This project, which is made possible by the generous support from the American and British people, is implemented by Malaria Consortium in partnership with Jhpiego, Banyan Global, and Communication for Development Foundation Uganda (CDFU), Deloitte Uganda and Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI).
The campaign comes at the heels of the nationwide long-lasting insecticide treated mosquito nets distribution campaign run by the health ministry.
The Health Ministry secured a grant of US $41 million from United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and UK AID to enhance efforts to fight Malaria in endemic districts.
The interventions included among others the distribution of long lasting insecticide mosquito nets in communities, capacity building of district health teams to manage malaria among other that will reduce childhood and maternal mortality in the country.
